Trilogy Engagement Rings: A Timeless Style

In this latest blog, I’ll break down why trilogy engagement rings are one of the best options for an engagement ring. Trilogy rings are also known as three stone rings, they have been a popular choice of engagement ring since the early 1900’s. The thing I love most about three stones, is the infinite combinations available that makes each ring unique.

Grace Kelly wearing her three stone engagement ring made by Cartier

Grace Kelly’s engagement ring feature a huge 10ct Emerald cut diamond, flanked by two straight baguette diamonds. This ring was made in platinum, a popular choice in the 1940’s. The combination of the straight edges on each diamond is the most elegant look! Amal Clooney has a similar engagement ring, also made in platinum.

Below are examples of trilogy engagement rings all custom-made at the Set Together Studio. Each ring is different to the next and has certain details within the design to make it look proportionate.

Changing the size, shape and colour of each gemstone or diamond will give your trilogy engagement ring a completely different look to the next. Care must be taken when designing three stone engagement rings, if the proportions are wrong, the ring can look weird.

This first example is a modern three stone engagement ring. It looks elegant and sophisticated due to the straight edges of the baguettes and center emerald-cut diamond.

The side baguette diamonds are set into the band rather than into upswept shoulders. This is a unique feature that I love! The total space between the inner edge of each baguette to the outside edge of the center diamond is equal to the width of the center stone. Spacing gemstones in a way that calculates evenly together ensures the ring will look proportionate.

Oval and baguette diamond engagement ring

This ring has a 1ct oval-shaped center diamond flanked by two tapered baguettes. This particular ring has received the most likes on my Instagram page and also on Pinterest. It represents the perfect balance between feminine and masculine, with the curves of the oval and straight edges of the tapered baguettes. It also has two hidden pink sapphires set underneath the center stone. You can read more about this ring here.

Green sapphire and diamond three stone engagement ring

This beautiful green sapphire in the above photo, is from Central Queensland, the diamonds either side make the green stand out more than if it was set in a solitaire. The gold used in this engagement ring was recycled from my clients grandmothers ring - A great way to bring history into jewellery. The band is the same width as the edges of the trapezoid diamonds, so there is a smooth finish to it.

Oval Peach Sapphire and pear-shaped diamond ring, hand-made in 18ct Rose Gold.

This three stone ring has a soft look due to the rounded oval center stone and the side pear-shaped diamonds. The center stone is a lovely peach coloured Sapphire, giving it more of feminine touch. The rose gold was chosen to compliment the center stone.

As you can see with these four examples, there are so many ways you can create a unique three stone engagement ring. For more ideas on what designs can be made, check out the gallery here.
